First town in Hardin County. Established in 1858 at a strategic crossing from Beaumont to points north. Original name was Benton. Rapidly became a thriving steamboat port and reached a population of about 300, but declined in the 1880s with coming of the railroad.

Location Description Leatherwood Cemetery: From Hwy 96 North turn right onto Cooks Lake Road, then turn left onto Leatherwood. Leatherwood makes a very slight bend, to the left, and the cemetery will be on the right hand side of the road.
