Lukefahr School Community

Bay City, Matagorda County

Marker Text

In 1910, Casper Lukefahr came with family to this area from Nebraska. He donated property (1 mi. W) for a community school, which was named for him. The school was open until 1939, when the common school district of which it was part consolidated with Van Vleck School District. A rural community developed around the building, which housed primary school students and also functioned as a community center. Residents came to the schoolhouse regularly for church and revival services, and social activities. By 1939, the school districts across the county consolidated into five independent school districts, leading to the decline of this and other rural communities.
